Experience and Education
Russ is a Research Associate Professor in the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) and has a partial appointment with WSG. His research interests and background are in aquatic microbiology. Russ leads the UW Ballast Water Research Team, a group of scientists and students in SAFS who are examining the ballast water of ships entering Puget Sound and working with vendors who are developing ballast water treatment systems. Russ has a bachelor of science degree in Biology from Muhlenberg College, a master’s degree in Marine Science from the College of William and Mary, and a doctorate in Fisheries (emphasis in Marine Microbiology) from the University of Washington.
Current Activities
- Lead UW Ballast Water Research Team in SAFS
- Interact with maritime industry and vendors in the development of ballast water treatment technologies
- Lead research activity that examines microbiology of larval marine fish, biodegradation of anthropogenic contaminants in the aquatic environments
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students
- Teach FISH/MICROM 490, Aquatic Microbiology
