Experience and Education
Eric has a wealth of experience in providing education and outreach to identify and eliminate oil spill-prone activities associated with boating and marina operation. His service in the U.S. Coast Guard and graduate studies at the University of Washington in marine resource and port management have prepared him to address many pollution concerns adversely impacting shorelines and adjacent waters. Eric’s leadership on the Pacific Oil Spill Prevention Education Team and interaction with harbormasters, marina operators and boat owners have proved critical in helping effective spill prevention education reach target audiences, change behaviors and eliminate the causes of oil spills.
Current activities
- Develop and implement oil spill prevention outreach program.
- Chair, Pacific Oil Spill Prevention Education Team, assisting in development and distribution of Spills Aren’t Slick educational materials and promotion of the 1-800-OILS911 spill reporting number.
- Collaborate with Pacific Shellfish Institute to develop effective spill response to protect valuable shellfish resources.
- Provide technical and administrative assistance in developing a statewide Clean Marina program in Washington.
- Provide safety training for recreational and commercial fishing and tour boat operators.
- Chair, Pacific Coast Congress of Harbormasters' Training and Education Committee, ensuring pollution problems are addressed and introducing proven polluton prevention practices to boaters, harbormasters and marina operators.
