Ken is a renowned authority on molluscan biology who has contributed extensively to invertebrate research and who played a key role in developing a thriving shellfish industry in the Pacific Northwest. Ken’s influence extends well beyond the Northwest: he has worked on aquaculture issues in Australia, Canada, China, Chile, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines.

Ken earned his M.S. (1958) and Ph.D. (1962) degrees at the UW School of Fisheries (now School of Aquatic and fishery Sciences). He went on to become a SAFS faculty member (1962–2004) and Interim Director (1996–1998). He also was Director for the Western Regional Aquaculture Center (1987–1996 and 1998–2004), a USDA program that provides research opportunities for many of our students. And he was Associate Dean of the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences (1998–2004). Ken is currently serving as a Commissioner for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
