Dr. Michael A. Rice is a Professor of Fisheries & Aquaculture at the University of Rhode Island. He holds a B.S. in Biology (1977) from the University of San Francisco, and M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1987) degrees in Comparative Physiology from the University of California at Irvine. Dr. Rice's recent research interest is in the affects of population densities on the growth and reproduction of bivalve mollusks in aquaculture systems and in natural assemblages. He has several publications on shellfish aquaculture as a means to improve water quality and mitigate coastal nutrient loading, and has worked internationally to introduce shellfish aquaculture into developing countries, most recently Tanzania and the Republic of Georgia.
