SUMMARY:Capturing an emerging invasion: Arrival of European green crab
DESCRIPTION:After three decades on the coast\, the globally-damaging invasive European green crab was first spotted on Washington’s inland shorelines in 2016. In other parts of the world where the crab has successfully invaded\, it has harmed populations of native shellfish and other species and resulted in damage to eelgrass beds. Green crab was initially detected\, and is being closely tracked\, by a network of 54 early detection sites throughout the Washington portion of the Salish Sea\, monitored by more than 200 volunteers\, and agency and tribe staff members. Green crab is still quite rare in Washington’s Salish Sea\, but keeping it rare relies on finding new populations while they are still small. \nJoin us for an evening presentation by Crab Team Program Manager\, Emily Grason\, co-sponsored by Feiro Marine Life Center and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary to find out how you can help protect Washington’s inland shorelines either as a volunteer or as a beachgoer. \nAttendees are encouraged to provide a suggested donation of $5 to the hosts\, free for Feiro MLC members. \nMore about WSG Crab Team \n
