SUMMARY:SAFS Seminar: Ernesto Peñas Lado: The EU Common Fisheries Policy. Can we do the job?
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will summarize the origin of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) with emphasis on the events that shaped the policy to this day. The evolution of the policy over the years\, to achieve the sustainability of fish stocks until the last reform in 2013\, will be described\, and the challenges for the effective implementation of the reformed policy will be discussed. \n\nBorn in Galicia (Spain)\, Ernesto Peñas Lado was trained as a marine biologist\, and did research on fisheries and marine ecosystem modeling until he joined the European Commission in 1986.  Since 2009\, he has held the post of Director for Policy Development and Coordination of the Directorate General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs of the European Commission in Brussels. He has been responsible\, inter alia\, for the recent reform of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy adopted in 2013. \n
