DESCRIPTION:Whatcom Water Week is a week-long event that celebrates our local water resources.  Businesses\, non-profit organizations and community groups celebrate the importance of water\, share information about the state of the resource\, offer stewardship opportunities\, and expand awareness and appreciation of our marine and fresh water resources and the role water plays in our lives. This year’s events include: Baker to Bay Symposium\, Streams of Thought Film Festival\, Run with the Chums 5k fun run/walk\, salmon sighting and international coastla cleanup. SUMMARY:Streams of Thought Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:As part of Whatcom Water Week\, Streams of Through Film Festival will feature four films at the Pickford Film Center: \nEbb and Flow: Sept. 16\, 6:30-8:30pm \nhis film follows 93yr old Jerry (Eiichi) Yamashita’s recounting of the family history to his son Patrick\, around a campfire on their shellfish tidelands. Relying on Jerry’s excellent memory and rare archival footage\, we are taken on a journey spanning three generations\, beginning with Jerry’s father Masahide’s immigration from Tokyo to Seattle in 1900. Arriving with nothing but the clothes on his back and an irrepressible entrepreneurial spirit\, his many years of seemingly unending struggle\, are revealed. Eventually\, his talent for problem solving would play a pivotal role in saving the west coast shellfish farming industry from complete collapse in 1930\, with a Japanese Oyster. Ebb and Flow Trailer \nAlso showing with the feature film are locally produced short films: \nServants of the Salish Sea and Oystertopia\, Stewards of the Salish Sea \nFilm producers for the feature film and the shorts will be available to answer questions! \nSonic Sea: Sept. 17\, 1:00-3:00pm \nOceans are a sonic symphony. Sound is essential to the survival and prosperity of marine life. But man-made ocean noise is threatening this fragile world. Sonic Sea is about protecting life in our waters from the destructive effects of oceanic noise pollution. Sonic Sea Trailer \n​Guest Speakers: \nMichael Jasny\, Director\, Marine Mammal Protection Project\, NRDC\, and Rob Williams\, Co-Founder\, Oceans Initiative. \nPaddle to Seattle: Sept 18\, 8:00-10:30pm \nTwo best friends build their own kayaks and paddle alone for 97 days in the wilderness over 1\,300 miles from Alaska to Seattle and survive to talk about most things. Paddle to Seattle Trailer \nShown with local film short “North Fork River Rats.” \nBeyond the Mirage: Sept 19\, 8:00-10:00pm​ \nBeyond the Mirage is a journey deep into the fascinating water shortage that is unfolding across the Western United States. Beyond the Mirage trailer \nSpecial Feature: Salish Sea Short Films will be shown highlighting the work of some of our local film creators! \n

DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nGardening Green provides practical information and simple yet powerful actions to protect the environment and human health. This is a relaxed\, fun class that incorporates presentations\, demonstrations\, hands-on experiences\, a native plant walk\, and tours of sustainable landscapes. By the end of class you will have completed a master plan of the changes you want to make. Includes an on-site consultation at your property and a class manual. \n\nThe course is held over six sessions from September 18 – October 4. Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m\, within class presentations in the mornings and landscape tours in the afternoons. \n\nRegistration is required.
