SUMMARY:Floodplains by Design: Addressing flood hazards and restoring habitat
DESCRIPTION:SHORELINE AND COASTAL PLANNERS GROUP SUMMER MEETING 2019 \nSOLD OUT! Please contact Nicole Faghin to be added to the waitlist: faghin@uw.edu. \nFloodplains by Design is an ambitious public-private partnership to reduce flood risks and restore habitat in the state’s major river corridors.  The goal is to improve the resiliency of floodplains while protecting human communities and ecosystem health. \nPlease join us in Renton to learn about this partnership between The Nature Conservancy\, Department of Ecology and Puget Sound Partnership. We’ll hear about the value of floodplains\, how Floodplains by Design started\, the grant program funded by the State Legislature\, and some project highlights. Collaboration among local partners is key to Floodplains by Design\, and climate change is affecting floodplains\, so we’ll touch on those\, too. In the afternoon we’ll head to the Riverbend project site on the Cedar River in King County. This project involved moving more than 100 people and removing a mobile home park. Ultimately it will reconnect approximately 52 acres of floodplain by removing portions of an existing levee\, excavating side channels\, and raising the bottom elevation of a relict gravel mine. \nSpeakers to date include Jessie Israel\, The Nature Conservancy; Scott McKinney\, Adam Sant and Lisa Nelson; Department of Ecology\, and Jon Hansen and Linda Holecek\, King County. \nNOTE:  Space is limited to the first 35 people who register. If registration is full\, please contact Nicole Faghin\, faghin@uw.edu\, to be placed on the waiting list. \nMeeting Information \nJuly 25\, 2019 \nRegistration: 9 a.m.\, Meeting Time: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. \nRenton Technical College \n3000 NE 4th St\, Renton\, WA 98056 \n
