SUMMARY:CANCELED: Crab Team New Volunteer Training - Port Townsend
DESCRIPTION: \n**Update: It is with an abundance of caution that the Washington Sea Grant Director has made the decision to cancel this training workshop. We do not want to risk anyone’s health and wellness given the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in our state. As members of our broader Washington Sea Grant and UW community\, current information regarding the University’s communications and protocols can be found at uw.edu/coronavirus. It is our goal to reschedule the workshop when we are able. Please reach out to crabteam@uw.edu with any questions. \n  \nInterested in becoming a Crab Team volunteer monitor to help protect pocket estuaries in Washington’s Salish Sea? This full-day training workshop will fully equip you to join Crab Team’s “Boots in the Mud” – no prior experience necessary. The workshop will include: \n\nAn introduction to pocket estuaries and the invasion threat from European green crab;\nLearning and practicing the monitoring protocols;\nIdentification of pocket estuary animals;\n\nMore information: This year\, Crab Team is recruiting a limited number of new volunteers to add to existing sites/teams\, so we cannot guarantee that all new participants will be matched with a team. If you would like more information on where opportunities are available\, please email crabteam@uw.edu. In addition\, we welcome attendees who are just interested in finding out what community science is all about\, you are under no obligation to join a team. We encourage you to contact us or read the Get Involved section of our website to find out what our volunteers do. \nLogistics: Signs will guide you upstairs to the event space at Northwest Maritime Center. We will have light refreshments and a short break for lunch\, but we recommend bringing a bagged lunch. Depending on weather\, part of the training workshop might be conducted outside on the patio. Please come ready to spend up to an hour outside\, including warm clothing. \nRegistration is required: Complete the RSVP form below and you will receive a reminder email one week prior to the event. \nThis workshop is co-sponsored by the Northwest Maritime Center \nContact the Crab Team at crabteam@uw.edu if you have any questions. Visit the Crab Team website for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Beach Clean-up at Howarth Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Snohomish County Extension as we clean-up bottles\, cigarette butts\, fishing gear and other plastic debris from our local beaches. We’ll meet in the parking lot. Bring heavy garden or work gloves\, an old 5-gallon bucket and pickers if you have them. If not\, we can provide them for you. Remember to dress for the weather and the soggy shoreline. Most trash is above the wrack line\, so you shouldn’t be in the water. However\, beaches do have fresh water streams that may need to be crossed. We alternate every other month between Howarth Park Beach and Picnic Point County Park Beach. Also\, be aware\, there are no restroom facilities at Howarth Park. \n  \nHowarth Park \n1127 Olympic Blvd \nEverett\, WA 98203 \n
