Climate Science on Tap: Oysters, Upwelling and Ocean Acidification
When infant oysters began dying off in record numbers, reportedly due to the increased acidification of Pacific Northwest waters, the Washington State Legislature asked the UW Dept. of Oceanography’s scientists for help. Parker MacCready, Ph.D, a physical oceanographer, has led a team developing a computer model to forecast the chemistry of ocean waters entering shellfish growing areas, such as Willapa Bay.
