Diatoms are useful in the study of earthquakes and tsunamis.  The types of diatoms in a tsunami deposit can help identify the source of the sediment in the deposit, and often are broken, suggesting turbulent flow.  Diatoms from sedimentary records of earthquakes and tsunamis can be used to estimate relative sea level change associated with seismic events.
