Preview of the 2016 Eastern Bering Sea Pollock Stock Assessment

Washington Sea Grant, the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences and the UW College of the Environment invite you to attend a preview of the most recent assessment of the Eastern Bering Sea (EBS) pollock—the target of one of the world’s largest fisheries. The forum provides fishery stakeholders and the public the opportunity to learn about the status of the EBS pollock stock and to ask questions and discuss the science underlying the assessment.

Dr. Jim Ianelli, NOAA Fisheries Alaska Fishery Science Center (AFSC) scientist, will present the EBS pollock assessment model and the most recent assessment of trends in the EBS Pollock stock, including the aspects related to the ABC (Allowable Biological Catch) for the fishery in 2016.

New this year, a multispecies trophic interaction model (CEATTLE) that links three key Bering Sea species—walleye pollock, Pacific cod, and arrowtooth flounder—will be included and reviewed in the assessment. The CEATTLE model uses the extensive AFSC food-habits data to link predation rates to mortality. Survey scientists for both the bottom trawl and acoustic-trawl surveys will be on hand to participate in the discussion.
