BACH Meeting September 2023 – Oyster Extravaganza
Please join us, Friday, September 22, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. PDT, for an in-person Oyster Extravaganza at which we will learn about the history of oysters on the West Coast, current work to restore Olympia oyster beds in the San Francisco Bay Area, and (optionally) dine on oysters. Please note that this will be on a Friday at 5:00p.m., not our usual Sunday at 5:30. There will not be a meeting on Sunday, September 24.
The meeting will be held in the Temescal room at the Cal State East Bay Oakland Conference Center, 1000 Broadway, Suite 109, Oakland. The program will begin with a presentation by the Wild Oyster Project, a local non-profit organization headquartered in Alameda, “dedicated to the restoration of native oysters in the San Francisco Bay.” They will speak on the history and collapse of the area’s oyster fisheries and their work to bring them back. Then we will hear from David George Gordon, Samantha Larson, and MaryAnn Barron Wagner, authors of the newly-updated book, Heaven on the Half Shell.
At 7:00 p.m., following the presentations and Q&A, those that wish to will walk approximately two blocks to The Cook and Her Farmer restaurant located in Oakland’s historic Swan’s Marketplace. One of the restaurant’s main features is their oyster bar, though they have a varied menu from which you can order. Note that this part of the evening is entirely “open bar.” BACH has not arranged for a set meal and attendees are responsible for their own restaurant bills. Note too that The Cook and Her Farmer stops serving at 8:00 p.m., but the space remains open until later. Hopefully our group will be able to stay together at Swan’s to enjoy a lively discussion of the materials from the formal presentations.
The space at Cal State East Bay is limited, so register soon to confirm your seat! Due to the limited seating, tickets will be required for this event, and we won’t be able to admit extra guests at the last minute. There will be a waitlist available, so, if the event is sold out, please do sign up anyway.
