Orca Bowl
February 27, 2016
Each year, high school students from across the state of Washington come together for a day of friendly competition and exciting enrichment experiences at Orca Bowl, Washington’s regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl® (NOSB). Washington Sea Grant partners with UW’s College of the Environment to offer the program. Up to 20 teams participate in the day-long competition, traditionally held in late February.
Orca Bowl challenges and recognizes Washington state’s high school students’ knowledge of the world’s oceans. During the daylong competition, hosted at the University of Washington Seattle campus, teams compete in a round-robin tournament followed by a double elimination round. Students tackle questions in all areas of marine studies, including ocean-related physics, chemistry, geology, biology, social sciences, and technology.
Orca Bowl relies on more than 80 volunteers and dozens of sponsors to make the program a success. Faculty, researchers, graduate students, and staff from the University of Washington, as well as scientists, educators, and staff from colleague institutions and agencies all volunteer for this event.
