Sea Safety and Survival (Drill Instructor) Training in Ilwaco

Washington Sea Grant and the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) are cosponsoring a Sea Safety and Survival Course (Drill Instructor) for commercial fishermen.

This Coast Guard-approved workshop meets the training requirements of the Commercial Fishing Safety Act to conduct drills. Coursework combines lecture and hands-on experience with the safety and survival equipment now required for commercial fishing vessels. Participants will learn about emergency procedures and be trained to develop appropriate emergency drills for their own vessels. Captains and boat owners are encouraged to bring their whole crew! 

Topics covered:

  • Cold-water survival skills
  • Emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), signal flares and mayday calls
  • Man overboard recovery
  • Firefighting
  • Flooding and damage control
  • Dewatering pumps
  • Immersion suits and personal flotation devices (PFDs)
  • Abandon ship procedures
  • Helicopter rescue
  • Life rafts
  • Emergency procedures drills
  • In-the-water skills practice

Fee: $125 ($62.50 for commercial fishermen who are Washington residents).

If you have your own survival suit, please bring it to the training.
