Tide Talk: Mud! Engineered by Life at the Tokeland Hotel and Restaurant

August 14 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Tide Talk: Mud! Engineered by Life

Presented by Professor Jennifer Ruesink (Biology, University of Washington)

Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay have mudflats that stretch literally for miles. But these habitats are more than just muddy and flat: they have amazing creatures living in them. Join us to hear about these mudflat-shaping species, which scientists call “ecosystem engineers,” and how mudflat ecologists study them. Learn how fast eelgrass grows, how much sediment gets turned over by burrowing shrimp, and the filtration rates of oysters and clams. Come meet your salty neighbors — and we mean those living in the bays — who are building and remodeling the mudflat habitat.

Admission is free! No registration required.

Topics and presenters are arranged by the Willapa-Grays Harbor Estuary Collaborative, with support from Washington Sea Grant.
