Mussel Monitoring – Cage Retrieval

Puget Soundkeeper is looking for adventurous volunteers ready to spend an evening retrieving mussel cages around Puget Sound! Mussel Watch is a regional study coordinated by the Department of Fish and Wildlife that utilizes mussels to monitor water quality. In October, teams of volunteers throughout Puget Sound installed cages of mussels at a late night low tide. Lake Union Kayak Patrol

Puget Soundkeeper needs your help each week as we paddle through Lake Union and remove trash from the water while keeping an eye out for other pollution violations. Volunteers will be in double kayaks outfitted with trash bags, grabbers, and nets for scooping debris from the water. Puget Soundkeeper has collected water samples from over 45 sites in the Puget Sound watershed to look for the presence of microplastics. We document the extent of microplastic pollution in Puget Sound to help inform future policy proposals, technology solutions, and restoration efforts that protect our northwest waterways. Volunteer patrols form a central part of Puget Soundkeeper's effort to monitor pollution and prevent debris from reaching our waterways. While on patrol, we keep an eye out for abnormal discharges, oil slicks, and other emergent pollution. We also check for the application of best management practices by shoreline businesses.
