Recreational crab fishing season openings for Dungeness and Red Rock Crab: Opens: 7:00am July 15, 2016 Marine Area 7 South - San Juan Islands/Bellingham Marine Area 9 Admiralty Inlet -- The portion of Marine Area 9 north of the Hood Canal Bridge to the line connecting Foulweather Bluff and Olele Point Once opened, crab fishing will be allowed Thursdays through Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be closed. For more information on crab season openings go to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

When infant oysters began dying off in record numbers, reportedly due to the increased acidification of Pacific Northwest waters, the Washington State Legislature asked the UW Dept. of Oceanography’s scientists for help. Parker MacCready, Ph.D, a physical oceanographer, has led a team developing a computer model to forecast the chemistry of ocean waters entering shellfish growing areas, such as Willapa Bay. Crab Catch Reports Due
Crabbers can submit summer catch record cards to WDFW by mail at CRC Unit, 600 Capitol Way N., Olympia, WA 98501-1091. They can also report their catch online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfish/crab/ from Sept. 6 through Oct. 1.

Garden of the Salish Sea Curriculum (GSSC) is an innovative K-12 stewardship and community environmental education initiative created on Lummi Island in 2012. In her Speaker Series talk, Julie Hirsch will present Oystertopia: Stewards of the Salish Sea, a short film directed by Sam Giffin that documents a GSSC oyster planting carried out by Lummi Island students in June 2016. She will also offer a slide presentation that focuses on shellfish harvesting, ocean acidification and stewardship of the Salish Sea.
