Bellingham SeaFeast showcases and celebrates our rich maritime heritage, thriving working waterfront, commercial fishing and seafood industries, and the culinary bounty of our corner of the Pacific Northwest. This inaugural Bellingham SeaFeast, with FREE admission, appeals to all ages, backgrounds, and interests. There will be a ton of experiential activities, fresh seafood (and other fare), while experiencing Nature’s gift of Bellingham-by-the-Bay. Oysters, wines, microbrews, live music and so much more come together for two days every year. Hosted by the Shelton Skookum Rotary Club Foundation and attended by thousands, OysterFest is home to the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championships and is Washington State’s official seafood festival. The festival also features a popular cook-off, hands-on water quality exhibits, and is itself a giant a food pavilion with nearly 100 unique items on the menu. Garden of the Salish Sea Curriculum (GSSC) is an innovative K-12 stewardship and community environmental education initiative created on Lummi Island in 2012. In her Speaker Series talk, Julie Hirsch will present Oystertopia: Stewards of the Salish Sea, a short film directed by Sam Giffin that documents a GSSC oyster planting carried out by Lummi Island students in June 2016. She will also offer a slide presentation that focuses on shellfish harvesting, ocean acidification and stewardship of the Salish Sea.

David will discuss some recent results and emerging hypotheses related to marine survival of salmon in the Salish Sea. Bottom-up processes mechanistically link with top-down control of populations, and these interactions are mediated by environmental variability and human-induced changes in land and water use. He will discuss the implications of how natural and anthropogenic changes in water transparency and artificial light pollution have significantly increased the predation threat environment for juvenile salmon in the Salish Sea in recent decades.
