Sound Waters University, presented by Sound Water Stewards, brings together people passionate about life in Puget Sound for a whole day of classes to learn about the natural world and the fragile environment of the Salish Sea. Held for almost three decades, this valued educational event attracts 600+ people yearly. No prior knowledge is required to attend - just an interest in learning about and taking care of this amazing place that we call home. Come explore the Eastside at Lake Washington's largest freshwater wetland with Seattle Audubon! We'll descend a short but steep hillside into the slough, and then walk around the Bellefields Loop Trail. As we search the woods, channel, and blueberry farm for birds, there will be an emphasis on listening for bird sounds. Binoculars will come in handy, but scopes are not needed. Join Harbor WildWatch for an underwater journey of Gig Harbor Bay without getting wet (or needing special certification) through the Pier Into the Night experience. While you stay warm and dry on the dock, our divers use an underwater video camera to live stream exactly what they encounter below the surface. Volunteer patrols form a central part of Puget Soundkeeper’s effort to monitor pollution and prevent debris from reaching our waterways. While on patrol, we keep an eye out for abnormal discharges, oil slicks, and other emergent pollution. We also check for the application of best management practices by shoreline businesses. Puget Soundkeeper needs your help each week as they paddle through Lake Union and remove trash from the water while keeping an eye out for other pollution violations. Volunteers will be in double kayaks outfitted with trash bags, grabbers, and nets for scooping debris from the water.
