Mystic Seaport Museum is proud to present a new program, the “Literature of the Sea Seminar,” designed for readers, writers, and thinkers of any age, from late high school to seniors. Over Zoom, a small group will meet for one hour per week for three weeks to discuss the book Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera. This classic, best-selling novel set in Aotearoa New Zealand was later made into a major international film. Whale Rider is a quick read, but richly compelling as it examines perspectives and issues regarding the indigenous Māori peoples, female leadership, magical realism, and the modern environmental movement, with a center that swirls around whales and whaling.

Two sessions are available: Thursday, September 10, 1:00-2:00pm PT and Saturday, September 12, 7:00-8:00am PT.
