
Washington Fishermen’s Convention in Westport
December 4 - December 8
The Washington Fishermen’s Convention will be an up-to five-day learning and networking opportunity for new and experienced fishermen. Featuring two days of hands-on training, a two-day conference of networking opportunities and educational sessions, and a daylong on-water practicum for new deckhands to practice their skills, the Washington Fishermen’s Convention has something for everyone in the commercial fishing industry.
Working agenda:
December 4-5: United States Coast Guard-approved safety/first aid training
December 6-7: conference sessions, speakers, panels, industry coordination and networking for new and seasoned fishermen
December 8: on-water practicum for deckhands to practice new skills on a vessel
Conference sessions will include:
For new fishermen:
- Intro to Washington fisheries
- How to find a job
- Life aboard a vessel
- How to clean and sanitize a boat
- Hands-on knot-tying and gear work
- Quality fish handling and other topics
For experienced fishermen or captains:
- Business planning
- How to engage with fishery managers
- Fish habitat and climate change
- Banking and insurance
- Marketing your catch
- Maintenance and new equipment and other topics.
Other topics:
- Public speaking and storytelling
- Contracting basics and other topics.
