Oysterfest

The largest annual seafood event in South Puget Sound! Oysters, wines, microbrews, live music and so much more come together for two days every year on the first weekend in October. Hosted by the Shelton Skookum Rotary Club Foundation and attended by thousands, OysterFest is home to the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championships and is Washington State’s official seafood festival. Puget Soundkeeper is looking for adventurous volunteers ready to spend an evening retrieving mussel cages around Puget Sound! Mussel Watch is a regional study coordinated by the Department of Fish and Wildlife that utilizes mussels to monitor water quality. In October, teams of volunteers throughout Puget Sound installed cages of mussels at a late night low tide. State of the Oyster Study invites you to join them to look at bacterial contamination on privately owned beaches in Hood Canal and Puget Sound. Collection dates for the 2020 season are June 21, July 19, and August 30.  Shellfish need clean water to thrive. Pollutants can destroy their beds, and bacteria taken up by shellfish can sicken people who eat them.
