Volunteer for Orca Bowl

Do you enjoy insOrca Bowl Volunteer Laura Nelsonpiring youth about the ocean? Are you excited about getting more students involved in STEM science and careers? Orca Bowl relies on more than 80 volunteers and dozens of sponsors to make the program a success. Faculty, researchers, graduate students, and staff from the University of Washington, as well as scientists, educators, and staff from colleague institutions and agencies all volunteer for this event.  Join us and inspire the next generation of ocean scientists.

Volunteers Can Get Involved in Orca Bowl in Several Different Ways

  • Become a competition official: Help judge the teams or facilitate the team competition rooms: serve as a moderator, timekeeper, rules judge, scorekeeper, science judge, or a room runner. Competition officials are required to attend at least two trainings prior to the event, and be available for the entirety of the competition day (typically held in late February each year).   • Provide general competition support: Help with event preparation leading up to the competition and with specific tasks (registration, set-up/clean-up, meal set-up, message-running, etc.) on the day of the event.
  • Offer enrichment opportunities at the competition: Help with lab tours and other enrichment activities to keep the competitors engageOrca Bowl Volunteer Team: Jellyfishd throughout the event.
  • Be a team mentor: Assist new teams with competition preparation through content support and study sessions. Team mentors are sought out on an “as needed basis.”
