Meet Erick Dowell, 2025 WSG Keystone Fellow
WSG is excited to announce that Erick Dowell, a recent graduate of the University of Washington’s School of Marine and Environmental Affairs, has been selected as the 2025 WSG Keystone Fellow. Erick will be working with host Puget Sound Restoration Fund.

Orca Bowl 2025, Seattle | March 1
Orca Bowl challenges and recognizes Washington state’s high school students’ knowledge of the world’s oceans. During the daylong competition hosted at the University of Washington Seattle campus, teams compete in a round-robin tournament followed by a double elimination round.
Drill Instructor Training, Bellingham, WA | March 3 – April 7
This Coast Guard-approved workshop meets the training requirements of the Commercial Fishing Safety Act to conduct drills. Coursework combines lectures and hands-on experience with the safety and survival equipment that is now required for commercial fishing vessels. Participants will learn about emergency procedures and will be trained to develop appropriate emergency drills for their own vessels.
Skills and Drills Course for new or beginning commercial fishermen, South Bend, WA | March 27-28
Washington Sea Grant is sponsoring a two-day Skills and Drills Course for new or beginning commercial fishermen in South Bend, Washington. This course is geared towards individuals interested in learning the necessary skills to enter the commercial fishing industry. No experience is required.
Heaven on the Half Shell Talk | April 17 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Explore the significant historical and cultural role that oysters have played in the Pacific Northwest. Join authors David George Gordon, Samantha Larson, and Mary Ann Barron Wagner as they discuss their book, Heaven on the Half Shell. Afterward, discover why Washington’s oysters are celebrated as a world-renowned culinary delicacy in a demonstration and tasting led by master shucker David Leck.

Fellows are given the opportunity to develop their portfolios as writers and communicators, building bridges between scientific information and public understanding.

Washington Sea Grant 2025 Request for Proposals
Washington Sea Grant (WSG) requests proposals for the funding cycle beginning February 1, 2026. Research must address issues of importance in Washington’s marine and coastal waters.

2026 Dean John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
The Knauss Fellowship provides a one-year, paid experience for highly qualified early career professionals to work on issues related to coastal, marine and Great Lakes science and policy in offices within the executive or legislative branches of government in Washington, D.C
