Mel Lemke is a self-proclaimed creepy-crawly-enthusiast who loves the deep sea. Hailing from the mountains of Colorado, Mel has always had an awe and appreciation for the complexity of marine systems, leading her to complete her B.S. in marine biology from the University of Oregon in 2021. During her undergraduate education, she learned about the diversity of marine invertebrates and discovered her passion for worms and mollusks. After graduating, Mel assisted in deep-sea research studying larval transport in the Gulf of Mexico, where she solidified her passion for deep-sea science. Now, she is completing her master’s at Western Washington University where she studies the symbiotic associations at hydrothermal vents. She hopes to continue her work on symbiosis in a future doctorate program and is excited to expand her studies to incorporate a larger diversity of marine systems.

In addition to her love for research, Mel is a passionate advocate for accessibility and inclusivity in marine science and education. With a background in early childhood outdoor education, undergraduate teaching and mentorship, and disability pedagogy, she enjoys incorporating diverse perspectives and collaboration into her work. As a 2025 Washington Sea Grant Science Communications Fellow, she is excited to continue learning about Washington’s marine systems, invertebrates, and marine scientists, while creating accessible and exciting educational content for everyone.
