Kate Litle, WSG interim director
In July, Washington Sea Grant (WSG) shared that Kate Litle, WSG interim director, had been nominated for the prestigious 2025 Washington Governor’s Outstanding Leadership Award. Now, we are so excited to say that Kate is a recipient of the award!
Along with 23 other dedicated public servants, Kate was recognized by Governor Bob Ferguson at a ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion on September 23. The honorees include managers from multiple state agencies, as well as the University of Washington and Washington State University.
“Washington’s dedicated public employees are the backbone of state government,” Governor Ferguson said. “They teach at our colleges and universities, operate our ferries and plow snow off our roads, inspect food for safety, provide skilled care to people in our veterans’ homes and behavioral health facilities, supervise individuals detained in corrections institutions, protect our highways, and so much more. They are often unsung heroes, responsible for our state’s many successes. Especially in these trying times, they shoulder many challenges. I’m proud to work alongside all of them every day. While we honor just a few today, know that I am thankful for all of their work.”
Kate has dedicated nearly 15 years to strengthening Washington’s coast through strategic vision, inclusive practices and steadfast care for her team. Kate accomplishments include leading WSG in delivering measurable statewide impact: from 2021 to 2024, the program delivered nearly $250 million in services and economic benefits to Washington.
Specific examples of WSG’s benefits to Washington from 2021–2024 include:
- More than 1,500 jobs created or sustained
- More than 70,000 hours of volunteer time, valued at $2.7 million
- Sustainable development practices and policies implemented in about 300 communities
In addition, Kate’s focus on equity, mentorship and respectful dialogue has fostered a workplace where all voices are valued and staff feel empowered. She is a steady, trusted leader whose impact is felt across the state. “Known as a mentor and sounding board, [Kate] is often sought out for insight on complex challenges and organizational history,” her nomination letter said. “Through consistent, inclusive communication and a calm, collaborative approach, [Kate] has helped build a workplace where staff feel supported, valued, and empowered to contribute fully.”
