Luciana Calle was born and raised in the Midwest yet has been living in Washington for 8 years. Her awe for the Pacific Northwest and her fascination with the environment led her to pursue environmental science and resource management, which she currently studies as an undergraduate at the University of Washington. She also took an interest in climate change early in her undergraduate studies and is pursuing a minor in climate science, where she plans to examine the inextricable connections between the biosphere and climate system of both the past and present. As part of her minor’s capstone project, Luciana researched the climate mitigation potential of seagrass meadows globally and discussed their ecological and economical importance by developing an article, policy brief, and research paper. Through this experience, she also cultivated her passion for coastal ecosystems and science communication. In her free time, she explores beaches and engages in tide pooling, her new favorite hobby.
As a second-year undergraduate, Luciana is looking forward to growing her marine knowledge and exploring research topics in plant physiology, paleoclimates, carbon isotopes, and water quality. She plans to share her knowledge with middle school and high school students in the upcoming months through the Seattle Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program, a STEM-focused organization serving underrepresented and economically at-risk students within Seattle, and inspire the next generation of scientists in environmental careers. As a WSG Science Communications Fellow, she is excited to support the work of marine and coastal research in Washington state and increase marine education for all community members to learn and get involved in Washington’s cherished marine environments.
