July 1, 2025

Ava Vaughan

WSG is excited to welcome Ava Vaughan as the Community-Engaged Intern! In her role, Ava will work with community engagement specialist Sanpisa Sritrairat, coastal hazards specialist Ian Miller, and partners at Washington Emergency Management Division to support coastal hazard mitigation planning and social vulnerability assessments.

Ava is currently pursuing a dual degree in business administration and environmental studies, with a minor in nutrition, at the University of Washington. Raised on the Olympic Peninsula, she is passionate about sustainable natural resource policy, food sovereignty, and building community resilience capacity. At UW, she has taken on leadership and service roles as President of Net Impact, Undergraduate Representative on the Population Health Initiative, Presidential Scholar, UWild Field Guide, Climbing Club Staff Member, and Student Farm Club Volunteer.

The Sea Grant Community Engaged Internship (CEI) for Undergraduate Students aims to broaden participation in coastal, ocean, and marine sciences by providing training and mentorship to early-stage university and community college students. The goal of this paid internship program is to provide training and mentorship to the next generation of scientists, decision-makers and citizens. CEI students engage in place-based research, extension, education, and/or communication that respects and integrates local knowledge systems.

Congratulations Ava! We’re looking forward to seeing what you accomplish.
