Workshops and Classes

A one-day, all-inclusive Marine Weather Workshop taught by marine weather experts Jay Albrecht and Dave Wilkinson will prepare boaters for safety on Northwest waters, whichever way the wind may blow.

The workshop is co-sponsored by Washington Sea Grant, Northwest Maritime Center, and WSU Jefferson County Extension.

Topics covered include:

• relationships of atmospheric pressure and wind
• determining the path and speed of squalls
• strong wind systems found in the Northwest and offshore and how to avoid them
• how 500mb wind patterns can help you find “weather windows” for safe passage

Washington Sea Grant and WSU Jefferson County Extension are cosponsoring a First Aid at Sea course on June 3 in Port Townsend. This Coast Guard-approved class will benefit recreational boaters and commercial fishermen alike.

Topics covered include CPR, patient assessment, hypothermia, cold water, near drowning, shock, trauma, burns, fractures, choking, immobilization, and First Aid kits.

Cost: $100 ($50 for commercial fishermen). Pre-registration is required.

Washington Sea Grant and the Gig Harbor Boat Shop are co-sponsoring a Marine Corrosion Protection Workshop: a hands-on class for marine professionals and other boat owners, commercial and recreational. Topics include Galvanic corrosion of aluminum, steel, and bronze; crevice corrosion of stainless steel; poultice corrosion of aluminum; corrosion–potential testing; potential monitoring systems for aluminum and bronze; advantages and disadvantages of various anodes; analysis of wood damage from excessive zinc; controlled potential systems for wooden boats.

Washington Sea Grant, the Port of Bellingham, and Whatcom County Extension are sponsoring a Sea Safety and Survival Drill Instructor Course for commercial fishermen and charter boat operators.

This Coast Guard-approved workshop meets the training requirements of the Commercial Fishing Safety Act and earns participants a drill instructor certification upon completion.
