November 26, 2024

The University of Washington College of the Environment seeks a faculty director to lead Washington Sea Grant. The faculty director will be responsible for strategic visioning and the implementation of research, outreach, education and communications while advancing DEI principles and practices. The faculty director will play a key role in serving the needs of Washington’s marine sectors and in connecting Washington residents with appropriate resources at the UW and beyond.

This position is open to current UW faculty members appointed at the level of associate or full professor. It is a 50% FTE administrative appointment over 12 months for a term of five years with the possibility of renewal.

This leadership model was proposed by Dean Maya Tolstoy of the UW College of the Environment. Dr. Terrie Klinger is currently serving as the interim faculty director. WSG sees distinct value in the leadership of a faculty director, in particular with regard to leading our cutting-edge research portfolio and supporting the application of impactful research and outreach by expanding collaboration across the college and university.

The faculty director will work with the deputy director and WSG leadership team to deliver a program that provides outstanding scientific, education and societal impact. Among their responsibilities, the faculty director will provide the development and implementation of a diverse funding strategy to support programmatic activities; communication with relevant federal, state and local agencies and entities to advance the programmatic objectives of WSG; and leadership of the WSG competitive research grant program.

Established in 1971, serves marine resource managers, supports strategic partnerships and helps sustain economic development while encouraging ecosystems-based approaches to management of Washington’s ocean and coastal resources. WSG looks forward to welcoming a faculty director to lead the program toward achieving its vision of healthy, productive and resilient coastal and marine ecosystems that sustain Washington’s rich cultural and maritime heritage, vibrant coastal communities, clean water and beaches, prosperous fisheries and aquaculture, diverse wildlife and an engaged public.
